Many people enroll in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan; attracted by extra benefits, lower premiums, or bundled coverage. But it’s good to know: yes, you can switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare (Parts A & B), under certain conditions and during specific time windows. That makes a “Medicare change” possible even after you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan. Here’s how it works.
When Can You Switch Back to Original Medicare?
You can make the switch during one of these enrollment windows:
Annual Election Period (Fall Open Enrollment): October 15 – December 7. During this time, those on Medicare Advantage can opt out and choose Original Medicare instead (and add a separate drug plan if needed).
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP): January 1 – March 31 each year. If you already have Medicare Advantage, you can drop it and return to Original Medicare (with or without standalone drug coverage).
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): In certain situations, for example, if you move outside your plan’s service area, you may qualify to switch back to Original Medicare outside the usual windows.
So a “Medicare change” from Advantage to regular Medicare is doable; as long as you act during the right time.
What Happens When You Switch? : What to Watch Out For.
Switching back to Original Medicare is generally straightforward; but there are important considerations:
You’ll likely need a separate prescription drug plan (Part D): Medicare Advantage plans often include drug coverage. Original Medicare does not, so you must enroll in a separate Part D plan (or risk penalties if you wait too long).
Medigap (Supplement) concerns: If you want to add a Medigap plan to help cover what Original Medicare doesn’t, be aware that outside certain “guaranteed-issue” periods your insurer may require medical underwriting. That could mean higher premiums or even denial based on health history.
Limited to a single change per Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP): During the MA-OEP (Jan 1 – Mar 31), you’re allowed only one change; switching from MA to regular Medicare (or to another MA plan).
No penalty for switching: You won’t be penalized just for switching from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare; but penalties can come if you delay or skip Part D when you make the change.
Why Someone Might Choose to Switch.
People consider switching back to Original Medicare for several reasons:
Their Medicare Advantage plan’s network is too restrictive, or their preferred doctors aren’t covered.
They prefer the flexibility of Original Medicare; to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, without network limitations.
Their prescription drug needs to be changed, or they found a better standalone Part D plan.
They want or need a Medigap supplement (though that comes with underwriting challenges).
Changes in the Medicare Advantage plan (costs, benefits, coverage) made the plan less attractive.
Switching gives them a chance to reassess and re-optimize coverage under “regular” Medicare.
Tips for Making a Smooth Medicare Change
Before you make the switch:
Review your current health needs, medications, preferred doctors, and specialists.
If you need drug coverage under Original Medicare, pick a Part D plan promptly after disenrolling from Medicare Advantage.
If you want Medigap coverage, check what your state’s rules are; some guarantee issue periods may apply, but outside those you may face underwriting.
Don’t wait until the last minute; make your selection early in the enrollment window to ensure coverage begins smoothly.
Consider talking to a trusted advisor to walk through your options and timing.
