Medicare and Federal Retiree Insurance FAQ

Do federal retirees need to enroll in Medicare if they have FEHB?

No, you do not have to sign up for Medicare if you have FEHB coverage. Many retirees choose Medicare Part A because it is usually free. Medicare Part B is optional. Some people choose it to help lower their medical bills.

How does Medicare work with FEHB coverage?

If you have both Medicare and FEHB, Medicare usually pays first. FEHB pays second. This can help lower what you pay for doctor visits and hospital stays. If you do not enroll in Part B, your FEHB plan will still cover you.

Should federal retirees enroll in Medicare Part B?

It depends on your needs. You should think about the monthly cost of Part B and how often you go to the doctor. If you wait too long to sign up and do not qualify for a special enrollment period, you may have to pay a late penalty for life.
