Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. However, your enrollment steps depend on whether you already collect retirement benefits when you enter your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). When it comes to signing up for Medicare, timing is crucial.
If you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, Medicare should enroll you automatically in Part A and Part B. In this case, you may not need to take extra steps. If you are nearing 65, on the other hand, consider how the automatic process may affect you.
If you do not receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, you must actively enroll. Therefore, it’s important to sign up to ensure proper coverage.
If you qualify for automatic enrollment, you should receive a package in the mail three months before coverage begins. It will include your new Medicare card and a letter explaining how Medicare works. Furthermore, the letter confirms that you are enrolled in Parts A and B. If you are not enrolled automatically, then prepare to sign up on your own. Signing up for Medicare on your own requires some planning, especially if you are not automatically enrolled.
If you are 65 and not receiving retirement benefits, you must enroll yourself. Fortunately, Medicare offers three time periods for signing up for Parts A and B.
1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
The IEP lasts seven months. It includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months after your 65th birthday. Therefore, signing up during this time ensures continuous coverage.
2. Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
The Part B SEP lets you delay enrollment without penalty if you had job-based insurance from your work or your spouse’s work. In other words, you won’t be penalized for keeping your workplace plan first. You can sign up within eight months after losing group coverage or after you (or your spouse) stop working. As a result, you can avoid late penalties if you act quickly. This safety net allows you to align your needs before signing up for Medicare.
3. General Enrollment Period (GEP)
If you missed both the IEP and SEP, you can enroll during the GEP. This runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. Coverage starts July 1. However, enrolling during the GEP may cause late penalties and temporary gaps in coverage. Consider these factors carefully when you decide to sign up for Medicare.
