Does Medicare Cover A Cataract Surgery?

Does Medicare Cover Cataract Surgery?

Original Medicare Part A and Part B do not cover vision or routine eye care. However, Medicare does help pay for cataract surgery. You may need surgery when a cataract causes vision loss that affects daily activities such as reading, driving, or household tasks.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye. In the early stages, cataracts are small and may not affect vision. An eye exam can detect them at this stage.

As the cataract grows, it clouds more of the lens and affects your sight. Common vision changes caused by cataracts include:

  • Blurry vision

  • Faded or dull colors

  • Bright glares from headlights, lamps, or sunlight

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Trouble seeing in low light

  • Double vision

While mild at first, cataracts can become a major health concern over time. They may cause disorientation and poor decision-making. Even if the effects start small, worsening cataracts can put you and your loved ones at risk.

Cataract Surgery and Medicare

Medicare Parts A and B do not cover routine eye care. Still, Medicare helps pay for cataract surgery.

After you meet your Part B deductible, Medicare Part B pays 80% of approved costs. A Medicare Supplement Plan can cover some or all of the remaining expenses. Coverage through a Medicare Advantage Plan may differ by provider. Many Advantage Plans also include routine eye care.

Because costs and coverage vary, it’s best to speak with a Medicare Insurance agent. They can explain how Medicare coverage for cataract surgery applies to you.
